The design of the coin focuses on the recreation of the sculptural group that represents the death of the Trojan priest Laocoon, or Laoconte, punished by the gods to die strangled by marine snakes with their two sons. The work was made by Agesandro, Polidoro and Atenodoro de Rodas, belonging to the School of Rhodes of the Hellenistic period and that is in the Pío-Clementino Museum belonging to the Vatican Museums of Rome.
In the lower part the name of the issuing country "Città del VATICANO" is engraved, while the inscription corresponding to the motif commemorated: "ANNO EUROPEO DEL PATRIMONIO CULTURALE" (European Year of Cultural Heritage) can be seen from left to right in the semicircle. The year of issue "2018" and the mint mark "R" are placed at the top. Finally, the name of the artist "D. LONGO "(Daniela Longo) completes the design of the coin on the right side.
